Hurricane Preparation

With hurricane season officially here, FCU wants to help you prepare for the worst with a basic to-do list that can help in keeping you safe in case of a large tropical storm system.

Listen up

Always be aware of what’s going on with the weather! You can get weather updates many ways, from listening to the radio, checking the weather channel on TV and weather sources online, to even receiving tropical storm warnings on your cell phone.

Prep the House

Bring in anything that can be picked up outside, like bicycles and lawn furniture, and trim the loose or dead branches from nearby trees. Depending on the severity of the storm, you may also need to close and board up your windows with plywood. Inside the house, turn off and unplug all smaller appliances, and turn your refrigerator to the coldest setting (be sure to keep the door closed to hold the cold in!).

Collect Necessities

You need to have important documents like insurance papers and financial records handy, in case anything were to happen to your home or if you were forced to evacuate. It’s also a good idea to have basic tools like a hammer and screwdriver readily available. When making an emergency kit, always include: a 3-day supply of water and non-perishable food, cooking utensils/plates, flashlights and batteries, a first aid kit and daily medications, extra cash, mobile phones and chargers, baby and pet supplies, rain gear, insect repellent and sunscreen, eyeglasses or contact lenses, a fire extinguisher and any toiletries you need on a regular basis.

Know When to Go

In the worst case scenario, you may have to evacuate your home. In this situation, it’s always important to have a plan established with your family that dictates where you’ll go and what everyone’s roles are during the situation. Before the storm, fill up your car’s gas tank and don’t forget to plan to bring your pets with you.

As always, Florida Credit Union promises to have our ATMs fully stocked for members, to keep the longest available lobby & call center hours before the storm and to be open right after a storm passes, once it is safe for FCU employees.
