When severe weather approaches, we all need any help we can get. That's why Florida Credit Union has compiled hurricane preparation checklists for our members. As always, we promise to keep our branches and contact center open as long as possible before a storm and to reopen as soon as possible afterward.
Stay Tuned to Local Media
Always be aware of what’s going on with the weather. You can get updates several ways:
- Listening to the radio
- Checking the Weather Channel on TV
- Visiting trusted online weather sources
- Receiving tropical storm warnings on your phone
Prep Your House
There are a number of things you can do inside and out to protect yourself and your belongings.
- Bring in anything that can be picked up outside, like bicycles and lawn furniture
- Trim loose or dead branches from nearby trees
- If the storm is supposed be severe, board up your windows with plywood
- Turn off and unplug all smaller appliances
- Turn your refrigerator to the coldest setting, so if the power goes off your perishable food will stay chilled for the longest time possible
Collect Necessities
Make sure your important documents - such as insurance papers and financial records - are handy in case anything happens to your home or you are forced to evacuate. Have a hammer, screwdriver and other basic tools readily available. And when making an emergency kit, always include:
- Three-day supply of water and non-perishable food
- Cooking utensils and plates
- Flashlights and batteries
- First-aid kit and daily medications
- Extra cash
- Mobile phones and chargers
- Baby and pet supplies
- Rain gear
- Insect repellent and sunscreen
- Eyeglasses or contact lenses
- Fire extinguisher
- Any necessary hygiene products and toiletries
Know When to Go
In the worst-case scenario, you may have to evacuate your home. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Plan in advance where you're going to go and the route you'll take to get there.
- Make sure each family member knows what they are responsible for in an evacuation situation.
- Before the storm, fill up your car’s gas tank.
- Don’t forget to plan to bring your pets with you.
